Picture this: early in the morning you glide across mirror-smooth water in your canoe, a sea eagle circles silently overhead, and all the way to the horizon there is nothing but forest, reeds and glittering lakes. Welcome to the Mecklenburg Lake District<\/strong>, the largest connected lake region in Central Europe. More than 1,000 lakes lie here between Schwerin and the Uckermark – many of them so well linked by rivers and canals that you can travel from lake to lake for days or even weeks without ever having to come ashore. The Top 5 Experiences in the Mecklenburg Lake District<\/h2>\n\n

1. The M\u00fcritz – Germany’s Largest Inland Lake<\/h3>\n\n

The “little sea,” as the Slavs called it, is the largest lake located entirely within Germany at around 112 square kilometers – and the heart of the entire region. Out on the water, sailors, houseboat captains and excursion steamers share the vast expanse, along the eastern shore the wilderness of the national park begins, and in the evening sunsets bathe the lake in copper tones that alone make the journey worthwhile. Via the chain of lakes formed by K\u00f6lpinsee, Fleesensee and Plauer See, you can, in theory, cruise or paddle all the way to Berlin from here. 2. The M\u00fcritz National Park<\/h3>\n\n

East of the M\u00fcritz, Germany’s largest land-based national park protects more than 300 square kilometers of forests, moors and over 100 lakes – a landscape so wild that parts of it belong to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage. Sea eagles and ospreys breed here in a density found almost nowhere else in Central Europe, in autumn tens of thousands of cranes rest at Rederangsee, and car-free paths make the park a paradise for cyclists and hikers. 3. Waren (M\u00fcritz) – the Secret Capital<\/h3>\n\n

If the Lake District has a capital, it is Waren: this climatic spa town on the northern shore of the M\u00fcritz combines harbor flair with old-town coziness. Excursion boats set off from the promenade, small shops and caf\u00e9s beckon in the half-timbered lanes, and in the M\u00fcritzeum shoals of whitefish swim through Germany’s largest freshwater aquarium landscape – the perfect tip for a rainy day. 4. Wisents on the Damerower Werder<\/h3>\n\n

There are not many places in Germany where you can come face to face with Europe’s largest land mammals – the Damerower Werder peninsula in the K\u00f6lpinsee is one of them. Wisents have lived here since 1957, aurochs-like cattle weighing up to a ton that were once nearly extinct. 5. The Island Town of Malchow & Monkey Forest<\/h3>\n\n

An entire old town on an island in the lake, connected by a swing bridge that opens hourly for boats: Malchow is one of the most charming spots in the Lake District. On the edge of town there is also an attraction guaranteed to make children’s eyes light up – the Monkey Forest, where you walk right through the enclosure of a large Barbary macaque family, plus a summer toboggan run for an adrenaline kick afterward. Houseboat, canoe tour or SUP: the water is yours<\/h2>\n\n

What sets the Lake District apart from every other vacation region in Germany is best understood with a map in hand: almost all the large lakes are connected. The M\u00fcritz flows into the K\u00f6lpinsee, the K\u00f6lpinsee into the Fleesensee, and beyond that the Plauer See and a network of canals await that stretches all the way to Berlin and the Baltic Sea. This is not marketing copy, it is geography – and it turns the region into one single, enormous waterway.<\/p>\n\n

Accordingly popular is the houseboat vacation in the Mecklenburg Lake District<\/strong>: no license needed up to 15 hp, with moorings in nearly every town and the freedom to wake up in a different bay every morning. In the morning the lapping of little waves against the hull wakes you, in the evening you grill on deck while the sun sinks into the lake. Many who have tried it once are already planning their next voyage on the way home.<\/p>\n\n

But it does not have to be a houseboat right away. A canoe tour through the quiet canals between the Jabelscher See and the K\u00f6lpinsee has a magic all its own – all you hear is the dip of the paddle, somewhere a crane calls, and behind every edge of reeds a kingfisher might be perched. SUP riders will find ideal conditions here too: sheltered bays, few waves, plenty to look at. You can simply rent the equipment on site, for example at our watersports rental in Jabel – by the hour or for the whole day.<\/p>\n\n

And then there are the anglers. Pike, perch, zander and the fine M\u00fcritz whitefish are at home in the lakes, and fishing permits are easy to get online. Our favorite: the evening round in a rowboat, when the wind dies down and the lake lies as smooth as polished glass. Whether a fish jumps out or not then almost becomes a side matter.<\/p>\n\n

Our Recommendation: the Perfect 3-Day Route<\/h2>\n\n

Three days are of course too short for a thousand lakes – but enough for a taste that leaves you wanting more. Here is how we would go about it: the first day belongs to the water. In the morning you climb into your canoe in Jabel, paddle through the canal into the K\u00f6lpinsee and follow the wooded shore of the Damerower Werder peninsula. With a bit of luck you will spot not only eagles but also a wisent among the trees. A picnic in a bay at midday, back in the afternoon – and then simply nothing but beach.<\/p>\n\n

On the second day you switch to the bike. The tour to Waren runs along quiet paths and the Berlin-Copenhagen long-distance cycle route; in town the M\u00fcritzeum, a stroll through the old town and a well-earned fish sandwich at the harbor await. Anyone still full of energy adds the detour to the osprey camera in Federow. The return trip is leisurely in the afternoon, ideally with a swim stop along the way.<\/p>\n\n

Day three is family day – or simply the day for fun: in the morning the Monkey Forest and summer toboggan run in Malchow, then ice cream at the island town’s harbor and the little spectacle of the swing bridge opening on the hour. The lake takes care of the rest of the day all on its own: swimming, dozing, grilling, marveling. If you are not thinking a little wistfully about leaving by evening, we have done something wrong.<\/p>\n\n

The Best Time to Visit the Mecklenburg Lake District<\/h2>\n\n

The short answer: from May to September. That is when the water is warm enough for swimming, the evenings are long and bright, and all the attractions, boat rentals and beach bars are open. High summer is the liveliest time – July and August bring the most life to the beaches and the most boats onto the water.<\/p>\n\n

If you prefer things quieter, choose June or September. The water is still pleasant then, but you will easily find a free spot at the swimming areas, and on the cycle paths you will have whole stretches to yourself. The shoulder months are more relaxed on the wallet, too – many accommodations, ours included, are cheaper then than in high season.<\/p>\n\n

And then there are the insider seasons that hardly anyone has on their radar. In April the region awakens: the first warm days, eagle courtship over the lakes, bird migration everywhere. In October the beech forests glow golden, mist lies over the water in the mornings, and tens of thousands of cranes fly trumpeting across the sky. A vacation in the Mecklenburg Lake District<\/strong> then has a stillness you search for in vain in summer. We admit it: autumn is our favorite time.<\/p>\n\n

Staying Right in the Heart of the Lake Paradise: in Jabel by the Lake<\/h2>\n\n

And finally, perhaps the most important tip – and yes, now comes the part where we rave about our own home: choose your location wisely. The well-known spots right on the M\u00fcritz are wonderful, but crowded accordingly in summer and booked out early. The alternative is called the second row – and that is where Jabel lies.<\/p>\n\n

The little village on the Jabelscher See sits right between Malchow and Waren, in the middle of the Nossentiner\/Schwinzer Heide nature park. You can reach all five top experiences of this article in a maximum of 25 minutes, most of them in ten. At the same time you stay wonderfully peaceful: forest right up to the shore, a long natural beach, a frog concert instead of traffic noise in the evening – and via the canal you head straight into the great waterway by boat.<\/p>\n\n
