Müritz Bike Path & More: the 5 most beautiful bike tours around Jabel

Bike path on the shore of the Jabelscher See on the Müritz

Not a hill in sight, but shady avenues, fragrant pine forest and, every few kilometers, a lake glinting between the trees: cycling on the Müritz is deceleration on two wheels. The region is flat enough for completely untrained legs and varied enough that even avid riders get carried away. Whether the big Müritz Bike Path once around the lake, an international long-distance route or a short after-work loop along the shore – here every pace and every age finds its route. We have put together the five most beautiful tours around Jabel for you, including map tips and an honest take on who each one is worth it for.

Top 5 bike tours on the Müritz

1. The Müritz loop: once around the lake

The classic among the tours – and for many the reason to come here in the first place: for around 90 kilometers, the bike path around the Müritz leads through the car-free national park on the eastern shore, past the colorful half-timbered rows of Röbel, through Klink with its castle and, of course, through Waren. Sporty riders can manage the loop in a day, but two stages with an overnight stay and long breaks offer far more enjoyment. The route is signposted throughout, mostly paved or well surfaced – and thanks to the flat topography, it is doable for occasional cyclists too.

2. Berlin-Copenhagen long-distance bike path

One of Europe’s most popular long-distance bike paths runs right through the Lake District – and, a little local pride here: only about 100 meters past our holiday apartments in Jabel. If you don’t want to take on all 630 kilometers to Copenhagen at once, pick out a single day stage – from Jabel heading north via Waren into the wide forests or leisurely south toward Malchow. Along the way, you experience the route just the way its fans love it: little traffic, plenty of nature and villages where time runs a bit slower.

3. Through the Müritz National Park

Car-free, quiet, wild: the trails between Federow, the Käflingsberg tower and Boek are among the most beautiful natural routes you can ride by bike in Germany. Instead of engine noise, you hear birdsong; instead of traffic lights, you stop for observation hides, lookout towers and swimming spots. The osprey camera in Federow is the perfect starting point, and the view from the tower over the sea of forest is the well-earned highlight. You will find all the details on trails, wildlife and the best route through the park in our article on the Müritz National Park.

4. The Three Lakes loop: Jabel – Malchow – Fleesensee

Our home loop, and perhaps the most underrated tour in the region: from Jabel it runs along the Jabelscher See, over the causeway into the island town of Malchow – a mandatory stop at the swing bridge, which opens on the hour for the boats – and back along the Fleesensee. Around 30 relaxed kilometers that feel like a vacation within a vacation: ice cream at Malchow harbor, a swim break at the Fleesensee, eagles above the Kölpinsee. For families with reasonably confident young riders, this loop is the perfect first “big” tour.

5. To the peninsula of the wisents

Short, flat and with a destination no child ever forgets: the family tour from Jabel to the Damerower Werder wisent reserve on the Kölpinsee is done in a good half hour – plus time for the feeding show, where Europe’s largest land mammals come within a few meters of the platform. The path leads along quiet side roads and forest trails, with swimming spots on the Kölpinsee beckoning along the way. As a half-day trip with a built-in “wow,” this tour simply can’t be beaten.

What you’ll experience along the way: more than just kilometers

There are cycling regions where you cover distance. And then there is the Müritz, where you find a reason to stop every few kilometers. Sometimes it’s a sea eagle circling over a clearing, sometimes a swimming spot that looks too tempting to ride past. Sometimes a farm shop with fresh strawberries, sometimes a fish smokehouse that smells suspiciously good. We’ll tell it like it is: anyone trying to keep up their average pace here has fundamentally misunderstood something.

The landscape constantly changes its face along the way. In early summer, the rapeseed fields between the avenues glow bright yellow; in high summer, the old lindens and chestnuts cast their shade exactly where you need it. And in fall, when formations of cranes cross the golden forests, you ride stretches with your mouth open. The most beautiful moments on the bike paths around the Müritz are in no tour plan – they simply happen.

So pack generously: swimwear, binoculars, a small bite to eat and, above all, time. Between the towns there are longer forest stretches with no place to stop for a break – a snack in your bag makes the loop noticeably more relaxed. One water bottle per person is a must in summer, and sunscreen goes without saying.

And what if a shower does pass through? No big deal. In Waren, Röbel and Malchow, cafés, museums and the Müritzeum wait as a cozy refuge until the sun takes over again. Mecklenburg rain has a habit of disappearing quickly anyway – usually a rainbow follows over the lake, and the air smells of pines.

Map, signposting & the right direction

The good news first: getting lost on the Müritz is genuinely hard. All the major routes are signposted continuously and reliably, with waymarkers at every relevant intersection. Still, a map belongs in your bag – if only so you can spontaneously shorten or extend along the way, when your legs want more or less than planned.

You can get the classic paper Müritz Bike Path map at the tourist information offices in Waren and Röbel or in bookstores. Digitally, Komoot and Outdooractive work wonderfully: the most important tours are ready to go there, can be loaded onto your phone and used offline too – handy, because the signal occasionally gets weak in the forest sections.

A detail that many only learn afterward: ride the Müritz loop clockwise and you’ll have the most beautiful water views on your side in the national park section. And if you spread the 90 kilometers over two days, it’s best to stay overnight in Röbel or Boek – that way there’s time for swimming stops on both days, and the second day rolls out with no time pressure at all.

E-bike, rental bike or your own bike: anything goes

Heaving your own bike onto the car rack, checking the straps, nervously glancing in the rearview mirror three times along the way – you can do that. But you don’t have to: at our bike rental in Jabel you can rent modern bikes by the day or week, hassle-free and even as a day guest without an overnight stay. The bikes come with a basket and a lock – so the shopping stop at the farm shop is already planned in.

By the way, e-bikers have long been in the majority on the Müritz, and the region is made for it: the distances between the towns fit perfectly with one battery charge, and there simply are no steep ramps to drain it. With us you charge your battery at the e-bike charging station – overnight or during a swim break, just as the tour plan allows.

Extra tip for the budget-conscious: guests of our holiday apartments get the Cycling Vacation Special in the winter half-year, with free rental bikes from three overnight stays. Fall in particular has its very own magic on the bike paths – golden avenues, clear air and routes you have almost to yourself. Anyone who has once ridden around the Müritz in October understands why we rave about it.

After the tour: arriving at the lake in Jabel

The beautiful thing about cycling around the Müritz: at the end of every tour, the water is waiting. At our nature and beach campsite in Jabel, you literally roll right up to the shore, lean your bike against a tree and jump into the lake – sports science has yet to invent a better recovery for tired legs. Afterward: grilling at your pitch or pizza and a cold drink on the restaurant terrace, while the sun sinks behind the Jabelscher See.

Those who prefer solid walls also cycle right up to the door with us: our holiday apartments and holiday homes in Jabel and Nossentin are decidedly bike-friendly – with secure storage and the Berlin-Copenhagen long-distance bike path practically at the garden fence. Saddling up in the morning without loading the car first: that alone completely changes the character of a cycling vacation.

And since, as everyone knows, after the tour is before the tour: from the breakfast table you can wonderfully plan the next route. The wisents today, the national park tomorrow, and maybe the big loop the day after? There’s no running short on routes here anytime soon – more likely on vacation days.

Around 90 kilometers. Sporty riders can manage it in a day, but two stages of 45 kilometers each with an overnight stay are far more relaxed – for example in Röbel or Boek.

Yes – the region is flat, the trails are well developed and signposted throughout. Occasional cyclists and families get along just fine too, as long as they plan enough breaks.

Both directions work; clockwise you have the nicer lake views on your side along the national park shore. More important than the direction is a generous time cushion for spontaneous stops.

At the tourist information offices in Waren and Röbel, as a cycling map in bookstores, or digitally via Komoot and Outdooractive – where the most important tours are ready to go and usable offline.

Yes, more and more hosts offer charging stations. At Genuss-Ferien in Jabel you charge your battery directly at our e-bike charging station – overnight or during a swim break.

Yes, for example our bike rental in Jabel: modern bikes with a basket and lock, by the day or week, for day guests without an overnight stay too.

Yes, the section through the Mecklenburg Lake District is well developed and leads over quiet paths through forests, avenues and small villages – including right through Jabel.

The short tour from Jabel to the Damerower Werder wisent reserve: little traffic, swimming spots on the Kölpinsee along the way and, as a destination, the feeding show with Europe’s largest land mammals.
