Top 5 Attractions in Waren (Müritz)

Old town with church on the Müritz - an excursion destination near Jabel

Excursion boats sound their horns in the harbor, the alleys smell of fresh fish and coffee, and the tower of St. Georgen rises above the red rooftops: Waren (Müritz) is the secret capital of the Mecklenburg Lake District. This climatic health resort on the northern shore of the great lake effortlessly achieves what other vacation spots fail at – it combines lively harbor life with genuine small-town coziness and wild nature right on the doorstep. Whether it is a stroll through town, a museum visit or a start into the national park: from Jabel you are right in the middle of it all in about 15 minutes. Here are the five places in Waren you should not miss. These five attractions in Waren are ones you should not let slip by.

Waren (Müritz): our 5 most beautiful highlights

1. The City Harbor with Promenade

The living room of the town – and probably the most beautiful harbor in the entire Lake District. Cafés, fish restaurants and ice cream parlors line the promenade, while sailing yachts and the white excursion boats of the Müritz fleet bob in front of them. This is where the tours across the lake set off, where locals and vacationers meet in the evening for a sundowner, and where you get the obligatory fish sandwich on the harbor wall while the wind whips around your nose. Our tip: come once very early in the morning, when the fishermen are readying their boats and the harbor is still completely quiet – a moment straight out of another century.

2. The Müritzeum – Germany’s Largest Freshwater Aquarium Landscape

A spectacular modern timber building from the outside, a window into the underwater world of the Lake District on the inside: in the Müritzeum, silvery schools of whitefish trace their endless circles through a two-story-high tank – a sight that keeps children and adults alike standing still for minutes on end. Add to that pike, sturgeon and catfish, an interactive exhibition about moors, forests and bird migration, plus changing special shows. The whole thing works in any weather, takes a good two hours, and turns a rainy afternoon into one of the best parts of your vacation. Current times and prices: mueritzeum.de.

3. The Old Town with the New and Old Markets

Between the two market squares, the old town of Waren unfolds all its charm: winding alleys, lovingly restored half-timbered and gabled houses, and among them owner-run shops offering regional goods instead of mass-produced wares. Worth seeing are the historic town hall in North German Tudor style, St. Mary’s Church and St. George’s Church, whose tower you can climb for the best view over town and lake. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, the weekly market fills the New Market with stalls full of fish, cheese and flowers. Plan a relaxed two hours for strolling – plus a coffee break, of course.

4. Swimming at the Volksbad and the Kietzbrücke

Waren has what many harbor towns lack: real beaches. The Volksbad on the western shore has been the town’s classic family beach for over a hundred years – sandy beach, shallow water, a bathing jetty and, in summer, a kiosk for fries and ice cream. If you prefer things quieter, follow the shore path toward Ecktannen to the forest bathing spots, where pines reach right down to the water and even in July you can still find a free little spot. The combination is what makes it so appealing: a stroll through town in the morning, then rolling out your towel in the afternoon and diving into the Müritz. In Waren, swimwear simply belongs in your day pack.

5. Federow and the Müritz National Park

Just a few kilometers southeast of town, civilization ends – in the best sense of the word. At the Federow national park entrance, you can look directly into an osprey nest via live camera in the information center and learn where cranes are currently resting or sea eagles circling. From here, hiking and cycling trails lead into a landscape of moors, forests and quiet lakes that ranks among Germany’s wildest. This makes Waren the perfect gateway for your first national park visit. We have gathered all the highlights, routes and the best times for wildlife watching in our post on the Müritz National Park.

Our tip: the perfect day in Waren (Müritz)

Waren rewards early risers. Those who arrive in the morning experience the town still relaxed: the alleys belong to the locals, the bakeries smell of fresh rolls, and at the market – on Wednesdays and Saturdays – people still chat at leisure rather than jostle. So: first a stroll through the old town, then a second breakfast with a view of the New Market.

Around midday, everyone is drawn to the water, and rightly so. Now you have a choice: Müritzeum or boat tour? Both take about two hours, both are must-dos. Our rule of thumb: on a sunny day take the boat, in heat or rain head into the cool museum. Anyone wanting to do both needs no tight schedule, just an ice cream in between.

Shape the afternoon to suit your mood and the weather: a swim break at the Volksbad, a side trip to the osprey camera in Federow, or coffee and homemade cake on the promenade while the sailboats come in. Do not rush from point to point – Waren is a town for drifting along, not for ticking off a list.

And then the loveliest part of the day: back in Jabel, the sunset awaits at the jetty – with twelve kilometers of distance between you and the town’s evening bustle. It is this blend of a lively day and a quiet evening that makes a Waren excursion from here so complete.

Waren with kids: short distances, wide eyes

For families, Waren is a rewarding destination, simply because everything lies close together. From the harbor it is only a few minutes’ walk to the Müritzeum, where the little ones get glued to the big whitefish tank – the two-story-high aquarium is the secret highlight of the whole vacation for many children. The playgrounds along the shore lie right on the promenade, so parents can enjoy their coffee within sight.

The boat tour works surprisingly well with children too: there is plenty to see on deck – boats, gulls, waves, with luck a sea eagle – and after ninety minutes at most you are back on land before patience runs out. Afterward, an ice cream from the harbor promenade is the tried-and-true remedy; the selection is large, and so are the portions.

On hot days, the golden rule applies: pack your swimwear and end the town visit at the Volksbad. The sandy beach slopes gently into the water, making it safe even for small swimming beginners; the kiosk next door solves the dinner question at the same time. And should the weather turn, the Müritzeum, churches and cafés are the perfect bad-weather backup. In Waren, boredom is simply not an option.

Good to know: a spa town with history

Waren is an officially recognized climatic health resort – and that is no marketing slogan, but a living tradition. As early as the 19th century, the first summer guests arrived to enjoy the combination of the invigorating climate by the water and the resin-scented pine forests; villas from that era still line the lakeside streets today. Anyone who looks closely will find traces of those early spa days everywhere.

Today around 21,000 people live here, and the town has preserved a balance that has become rare: touristically lively, yet never frozen into a mere backdrop. Between harbor and market you encounter genuine small-town life – bakers, bookshops, fishmongers where they recognize you after your second visit. That is exactly what makes the charm.

Practical to know: Waren has a train station with direct trains from Berlin, Rostock and Neustrelitz, among others – so the trip works completely without a car. Anyone who does drive parks at the harbor or on the edge of the old town for a fee; in high season it pays to come early, because by midday the lots reliably fill up.

The most elegant way to arrive from Jabel remains the bicycle anyway: along quiet back roads and the Berlin-Copenhagen long-distance cycle route, a good three quarters of an hour through forest and field. That way your day in town begins with a little nature experience – and the parking problem solves itself.

Staying near Waren – but on your own beach

Hotels in Waren are popular and quickly booked out in summer – and honestly: the best of the region is not experienced in town anyway, but by the water. In the evening, when the day visitors leave, the quiet lakes of the surrounding area only really come into their own. That is precisely when our guests are already sitting on the shore with a glass in hand.

Just twelve kilometers from Waren lies our nature and beach campsite on the Jabelscher See: pitches right on the shore, your own sandy beach, a harbor for your boat, and pizza on the restaurant terrace in the evening while the sun sinks into the lake. Here, urban bustle and rural calm lie a quarter of an hour apart – the perfect dosage.

If you prefer solid walls, rent one of our vacation apartments in Jabel – renovated, cozy and just 100 meters from the Berlin-Copenhagen long-distance cycle route. That way you have both: Waren for your day in town, Jabel for the quiet afterward. Our post on the cycle paths on the Müritz reveals the loveliest way to commute between the two.
